The challenge

BVG is the largest public transport company in Germany. Its fleet consists of more than 1,600 buses, 400 streetcars and 1,200 subway trains. 16,500 employees work on more than 180 properties every day, transporting more than one billion passengers a year.

The existing CAFM software at BVG had reached the end of its life cycle. The next steps were to be based on a thorough analysis. Furthermore, an expert was sought to audit the status of operator responsibility. In the further course of the project, technical expertise in construction-related facility management was of great importance.

The solution

Facility Manager Peter Schmidt initially created a concept study as the basis for the subsequent tender for a CAFM software solution to replace the outdated system. Subsequently, more than a dozen properties were successfully audited and operator responsibility was optimized in many areas. Through integration into a new construction project (USE24), the expertise of facility management during construction and structured commissioning for complex construction projects was also transferred to BVG. In this specific project, modern workstations for the IT department and the maintenance and servicing of ticket machines were created in a listed former bus maintenance hall in the heart of Berlin-Wedding. The project ran from 2018 to 2020.
